Book 6, p.12 of a vital records book in the Wisconsin Room of the Manitowoc City Library includes her maiden name - the name is barely legible, and could be Clerey, Cleney, Clevey or Cline.

She was burned to death by a fire in the dwelling. Family oral tradition says that she fell asleep while smoking a pipe.

General Notes: William was a calico printer prior to leaving England. The 1850 U.S. Census shows him as a farmer, with real estate valued at $250. William was a County board member from Kossuth, 1852-1855.

The following is taken from the newspaper account of William and Sarah's golden wedding anniversary:
"Mr. and Mrs. Eatough celebrated their Golden Wedding on Saturday last. Gathered under the parental roof for the occasion were his sons Joseph and Roger and his daughters Mrs. J. McCarty and Mrs. Pankratz and their husbands and children and a few other friends; one son was absent, who lives in Washington Territory and was unable to be present . . . Mr. and Mrs. Eatough have won their laurels in the wider and better field; their struggle for a position in life commenced in England, neither were nursed in the lap of luxury, but with courage and determination as working capital they left the mother country to build a home in the new world; a few years residence in the East, with the exercise of the most rigid economy enough was saved to take up land in the then untrodden wilderness and a log cabin sheltered the brave young mother and her baby; the battle was bravely fought and the victory gallantly won, and the celebration of the golden wedding finds the good old couple surrounded by a family of which they may be justly proud, three sons and two daughters, all useful and honored members of society..."

The 1870 Kossuth, Manitwoc County, WI Census lists William Eatough, age 55, farmer, with real estate valued at $2,500 and personal property valued at $343. Wife Sarah and three children (Joseph, Samuel and Dora) are also listed. The listed ages for Samuel and Dora are consistent with other sources. Joseph is listed as 27, which is not consistent with other records.

The 1880 census shows William and wife (Laura) and daughter Dora, and also Ella (age 8) and Hellen (age 6) Pellet residing with them.
