General Notes: !Initial source: Family group sheet from the FGRA collection of the
Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, submitted by Cleone
Sanderson Maw, Box 75, Melrose, Mont. Her source: Rec of Sarah B.
Roylance (deceased). This sheet says Peter was born abt 1566, of
England. This would make him only 16 years old if his son was born in
1582. "My Gates Ancestry", by Margaret T. Bellatti, 1979, says he was
born 1550-1566 at High Estre, Essex, England, and that they resided in
London. She says the information is from "The Genealogical and Personal
Memoirs Relating to the Families of the State of Massachusetts", by Wm.
R. Cutter, vol. IV, 1910, and from a Pedigree Research Survey of the
Church of Latter Day Saints Archives at Salt Lake City, Utah.

Peter married Mary JOSSELYN 71 about 1578 in High Estre, Essex, England. Mary was born about 1558 in England.

The child from this marriage was:

3084       i.  Thomas GATES 71,93 (born about 1578 in High Estre, Essex, England)

6169. Mary JOSSELYN,71 daughter of Edward JOSSELYN and Mary LAMBEE, was born about 1558 in England.

General Notes: !See notes for her husband and father. The FGRA sheet has her birth abt
1568. The LDS Ancestral File has her born 1568, Oakington,
Cambridgeshire, England. "My Gates Ancestry", by Margaret T. Bellatti,
1979, also says she was born abt 1568. However, if this date is right,
and her son Thomas was born 1582, she would be only 14 years of age at
time of his birth. This is possible but unlikely. It seems more likely she
was born about 1558

Mary married Peter GATES 71 about 1578 in High Estre, Essex, England. Peter was born about 1550 in High Estre, Essex, England.

6192. John PECKHAM,71 son of John PECKHAM and Unknown, was born about 1530 in E. Hampnett, Sussex, England, died in 1566 about age 36, and was buried in Donnington, Gloucester, England.

General Notes: !Initial source was a family group sheet in the FGRA collection of the
Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, submitted by Mary F.
McSpadden Chase, 4122 Fountain St., Long Beach Ca. Her sources:
"Peckham Genealogy"; Boxgrove Register; Archives. The sheet shows
his name "John or George", born 1530 but it is more likely he was born
earlier than that. It has no parents for him but has wife, Elizabeth Brane
or Brand, and lists six children, all "of Boxgrove, Sussex, Eng., the first
born about 1550. (see their notes)
The same children are given in the pedigree from "Peckham Genealogy",
page 192, but it doesn't give dates or places of birth. It says, however,
that the first two were buried at Donnington, so it is likely they were
born there.
As explained in the notes of Edward Peckham (called Henry alias Edward
in some records and accounts), there is a question as to whether this
John is his father. The "Parochial Topography" pedigree (see notes of
his father) starts with John, no data, shows sons John and Richard, no
wives, and for John, only one son, Edward. "Peckham Genealogy", 1922,
has a pedigree on page 192 which starts with John, only the name, shows
the two sons, John and Richard. Of John it says "died 1566; buried at
Donnington" and gives his wife "Elizabeth, dau of John Broud of Hove;
remarried to Richard Chatfield of Ditchling". It gives six children for
John (see notes for them) but shows only descendants of Edward. There
is a note in parentheses which says "(Believed to be son of Henry (12);
see Pedigree 4. S. F. P.)." (See notes of Edward for more detail about his
reasons for information from Pedigree 4 and more explanation.)
In another place he tells about portraits once held by the Peckhams of
Nyton, now in possession of "our cousin, Rev. Harry John Peckham, Vicar
of Nutley," which he says are of Mary and Elizbeth Peckham and further
says "must be portaits of the two daughters of Henry Peckham, who was
a gentleman of the household of the Princess Elizabeth and, therefore,
sisters to Henry Peckham, alias Edward."

John married Elizabeth BRANE\BRAND 71 about 1550 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England. Elizabeth was born about 1532 in E. Hampnett, Sussex, England.

Children from this marriage were:

3096       i.  Edward Or Henry PECKHAM 71 (born about 1550 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England - died on 1 Nov 1616 in East Hampnett, Sussex, England)

ii.  Mary PECKHAM 71 was born about 1553 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England.

iii.  Elizabeth PECKHAM 71 was born about 1556 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England.

iv.  John PECKHAM 71 was born in 1559 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England and died in 1559.

          v.  William PECKHAM 71 was born in 1561 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England and died in 1561.

vi.  Anne PECKHAM 71 was born about 1563 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England.

6193. Elizabeth BRANE\BRAND,71 daughter of John BRANE\BRAND and Unknown, was born about 1532 in E. Hampnett, Sussex, England.

General Notes: !See notes of husband. The FGRA sheet has birth abt 1532 of E. Hampnett
daughter of John Brane or Brand and has another marriage (2) Richard
Chatfield.
The IGI has an entry with birth about 1502, of Howe, Essex, England,
daughter of John Brane or Brond.

Elizabeth married John PECKHAM 71 about 1550 in Boxgrove, Sussex, England. John was born about 1530 in E. Hampnett, Sussex, England, died in 1566 about age 36, and was buried in Donnington, Gloucester, England.

Alice Stapley.

6194. Thomas SAMBOURNE,71 son of Henry SAMBOURNE and Elizabeth RICHARDS, was born about 1505 in Sonning, Berkshire, England and died before 19 Jun 1584.

General Notes: !Initial source: Family group sheet in the FGRA collection of the Family
History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, submitted by Alberta Huish
Christensen, 1291 3rd Ave, Salt Lake City, Utah. (2c 9r) Her source:
"Sanbourne Ancestry" by V. C. Sanbourne; will of husband on this sheet.
The sheet says the family is "of Sonning, Oxford, Eng., but Sonning is in
Berkshire. It gives his wife and four children. (See notes for them.)
However, another LDS ancestor record shows nine children for them. Perhaps some of them were of the second wife. It says his will was dated 21 Apr 1584, pr 19 June 1584.

There is a birth 31 Oct 1522, Stoughton Hall, to Lawrence Stoughton and
Ann Combs.

Thomas next married Joan POLSTEDE 71 in 1553 in Sonning, Berkshire, England. Joan was born about 1519 in Sonning, Berkshire, England.

General Notes: !Initial source: "Anc of Jeremy Clark of R. I...." by A. R. Justice, which
had estimated birthdate and marriage date, died 1614. Sources given by
him: Visitation of Kent 1619-1621; John Philpot, Harleian XLII; Burke's
History of the Commoners; Will of husb at Somerset House; Morant V. 11
pg 17; Par Reg of Wrotham, Kent.
The LDS Ancestral File has a death date, 13 Jul 1614, East Farleigh,
Kent, Eng. It had Anna Boland as 2nd wife of James, but "Anc. of Jeremy
Clarke..." says she was 1st wife of Edward Saxby.

"Anc. of Jeremy Clark of R. I...." gives his arms: "Or, a bend engrailed
azure, impaling, gules a bend vaire between six escallops argent
(Visitations of Sussex 164)." It says further: "March 18,1569, James
Clerke, of East Farley in Kent and Mary his wife, daughter of Edward
Saxbye, Esq., sold the manor of Great Gubyon alias Gobbyons hall, Esex, to
Robert Lord Riche (Morant, Vol. II, p 97). This property formerly
belonged to Sir Edward Saxby, as will appear from his will."
Also: "The will of James Clerke, of East Farleigh, Kent, Gentleman,
dated July 13, 1614, pr. Nov. 1, 1614, mentions daughter Grace, son
Edward, wife Mary, two sisters (not named), a servant Abraham Preble to
receive 5 pounds, and a maid Anne Joyce 40 sh. to be paid to every of
them within two years after my demise. 'I give to every of my servants
which serve me without wages, 5 sh. apiece in token of remembrance.
Margery Baker to have a dwelling in my house as before; legacy for
repairs to the church, and poor of the parish, and to Mr. Basden the
Minister. To Griffin Roches and Jane his wife, my house and orchard
lying in Courtwood Gate in the parish of Lynton, to have and to hold to
them during the life of said Jane, and after her death I give them to
Weston Clerke and to his heirs forever. I give unto Dolor Davis my
servand, my house and land lying in the parish of Marden, the which is in
the occupation of one Terrye. After the death of my wife Mary, I give
unto Weston Clerke all my lands, tenements and hereditants, lying in the
parish of Lynton, he paying to his brethren, to every one of them 100
pounds according to my last will for otherwise I know not how they shall
be paid. Recorded at Somerset House (Lawe 118).
In the original of the above will, the scribe had first written 'his
father's last will' and then had scratched through the words 'his
father's' and wrote 'my' above.
It is evident that William Clerke and his wife Mary Weston were both
deceased as the estates passed to Weston, their eldest son." (I think it
is not necessarily evident that Mary was deceased as the will of James
Clerke doesn't mention her as an heir, only her son Weston.)

General Notes: !Initial sources: Family group sheets of both marriages from the FGRA
collection of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, submitted
by S. Weston, 101 E. 2nd S., Logan, Ut. Source given was "New Eng. Hist.

as that given in "Anc of Jeremy Clark of R. I. ...." by A. R. Justice, which
says he was born 1550 and gives his death date from the parish register
of Roxwell. It gives his first marriage from the parish register of
Chichely, Bucks, but has no date nor place of his second marriage. It
says his christian name is variously spelled Gerrom, Hierome, Jeromye,
etc., and that the English pronunciation of Jerome is the same as Jeremy.

"Anc. of Jeremy Clarke..." says Sir Jerome Weston was High Sheriff of
Essex in 1599 and was knighted by King James 11 May 1603 at
Charterhouse. It gives a certified copy of his will: "In the name of God

Jerome next married Margery PERT 71 about 1595 of Writtle, Essex, England. Margery was born about 1554 of Mountnessing, Essex, England.

General Notes: !See notes for her husband. The FGRA sheet gives no data nor parents for
her and shows her surname "Gerte" but the source given, "NEHGR" vol 74,
shows it "Pert". It is also "Pert" in "Anc of Jeremy Clark of R. I. ....".
Neither source gives any birth or death information but both said she
was daughter of George and Alice Pert of Mountenessing, Essex, and
London, and widow of William Thwaites, an Alderman of London and
owner of the manor of Newland Hall, Essex. Both also said she was not
mentioned in his will so she probably died before he did.

6227. Mary CAVE,71 daughter of Anthony CAVE and Elizabeth LOVETT, was born on 1 Nov 1556 in Chicheley, Bucks, England and died on 6 Oct 1593 in Roxwell, Essex, England at age 36.

General Notes: !See notes for her father and husband. "Anc. of Jeremy Clarke..." gives
her birthdate but doesn't say where she was born. The same is true of
the "NEHGR" article. It is assumed that it was Chichely as one of the
souces given in the Clarke book for information about the Cave family is
"Chesters of Chichely, Genealogical Memoirs of Robert F.Chester
Waters". Her burial is given in both the Clarke and "NEHGR" articles,
from the parish register of Roxwell and both sources give her parents.

General Notes: From "The Ancestry of Lydia Harmon":
ROBERT GOODALE and his family embarked for New England on the ship "Elizabeth" of Ipswich (William Andrews, master) in April, 1634. In the records of the port it is stated that he was then thirty years of age. His wife Catherine was twenty-eight, and of their three little children Mary was four, Abraham was two, and a baby, Isaac, was only six months old.

Where the "Elizabeth" landed her passengers does not appear, but the first record of the Goodales in America is at Salem, where they settled at Great Cove in the North Fields. The spring, so often mentioned in the early records, in what is now called Liberty Hill Park, was on Robert Goodale's farm and was known for the first half-century of Salem's history as Goodale's spring. It is not recorded how he acquired this first farm. In 1636 and 1638 he received grants of twenty acres each in that portion of the town which became known as Salem Village, and he gradually acquired by purchase similar grants made to other early settlers, until he was the owner of a tract of land at Bald hill comprising four hundred and eighty acres, which was confirmed to him by a town grant on "7th: 11th mo. 1651." He probably moved to this new property at about that time, and, as opportunity offered, disposed of his Great Cove farm, deeding the house and a portion of the land to his son-in-law, John Smith, in 1658. Another lot was conveyed to Nicholas Manning in 1667, and a third conveyance was probably made to John Orne, who owned a part of the property, hitherto unconveyed, in 1684.

Goodale seems to have devoted his life to the development of his large grant for the benefit of his sons and daughters, to whom, as they married, he gave a generous acreage as a wedding gift, thus creating a family settlement about his own homestead. Although his clear firm handwriting would seem to indicate a good education, [book contains Image for The Ancestry of Lydia Harmon 1755-1836 ] he took no part in local or broader governmental affairs; and his name seldom appears in the records in any active capacity except as plaintiff or defendant in suits based on the ownership of his land or stock.

After the death of his wife Catherine, Robert Goodale married Margaret Lazenby of Exeter, with whom he entered into an agreement on August 30, 1669, whereby he promised to settle on her twelve acres of land, "a new dwelling house which I doe intend God willing shortly to build" and "two cowes & a horse or mare fitt for her to ride on." After her death this property was to go to his son Jacob.

Robert Goodale died between October 12, 1682, and June 27, 1683, the respective dates of the signing and proving of his will, which follows:

"I Robert Goodell being now aged & weake, in body as alsoe my wife and my daughter Elizabeth Bennett, hath taken care of me and therefor my will & desire is & I doe will & bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Bennett, & my grand child, John Smith, my house & the orchard & all the meddowes that I now possess with the pasture which is about eight acres of upland be it more or lesse, all which house land & meddowes my Daughter Elizabeth Bennett, and my Grand child, John Smith, shall Injoy after the lease, or terme, that it is now lett for, is expired, they or either of them paying as much rent, yearly as the wife of the abovesaid Robert Goodell hath lett it for which is to the value of twenty shillings in currant pay. dated the twelfth of October on thousand six hundred eighty two: & after my daughter Elizabeth's decease, the whole lands shal be my grand child's John Smiths. In witnes whereof I have heareunto sett my hand & seal

NOTES for the above list: Elizabeth's birthdate is an error. She was listed in the Lydia Harmon text as the 4th child of Robert's first marriage. This places her as b. abt. 1636, and makes her 24 when she had her 3rd child. The above text would have made her 11 years old at that time!

From http://www.wiggo.com/Personal/Genealogy/goodale/goodale.htm:
"In the 9th year of the reign of King Charles, 1634, Robert Goodell and wife Katherine Kilham (daughter probably of Henry and Alice Goodale Kilham) sailed from the port of Ipswich, Suffolk County, England, on April 30 on the ship
Elizabeth,' Capt. William Andrews, Master. With them were daughter Mary, 4, and sons Abraham, 2, and Isaac
age one-half year.'

They landed in Salem, Massachusetts, where Robert purchased 543 acres of land from the town of Salem and Danvers. That same year he received a grant of 40 acres from the town of Salem, between Ipswich River, Redding Road and the Newburyport turnpike. In 1652 the town laid out to him 504 acres."

6481. Rebecca 71 was born about 1616 in Duxbury, Plymouth, MA.

General Notes: !See notes for her husband. The FGRA sheet has birth abt 1616, of
Duxbury, no death nor parents. "Pioneers of Massachusetts" by Pope,
says she had a sister "goody Scudder", who took Alice to Barnstable for
baptism 21 Jul 1650.
"The Great Migration..." quotes from "NEHGR" 9:284, "Alice, daughter of
Abraham Peirce of Plimoth, being brought hither by Goody Scudder, his
wife's sister and here baptized July 21, 1650." It ssays further "Goody
Scudder was evidently the wife of John Scudder of Barnstable. Her first
name may have been Hannah. That her sister took her youngest child
implies that either Rebecca was ill, unable to nurse, or deceased
following the birth."
There is an entry in the 1997 IGI with surname Lothrop,
born abt 1605, Duxbury, spouse Abraham Peirce.

Rebecca married Abraham PIERCE 71 about 1637 in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA. Abraham was born in 1600 in Yorkshire, England and died before 3 Jun 1673 in Duxbury, Plymouth, MA.

6494. Thomas ATKINS 71 was born about 1618 in Possibly England and died before 10 Nov 1686 in Sagadahock, Sagadahock, ME.

General Notes: !Source: "Ten Daughters of Thomas Atkins of Kennebec" by Mrs. John E
Barclay, found in "New Eng Hist and Gen Reg" vol 121, (1967) pg 241.
There is a marriage of Thomas Atkins and Elizabeth in the 1994 IGI,
marriedd about 1644, of Mendon, Suffolk, Mass, LDS proxy sealing 3 Nov
1993 IFALL. There is a Mrs. Thomas Atkins in the IGI, married abt 1656,
Kennebec, Kennebec, Maine, proxy baptism 24 Jun 1941 SLAKE, endowed
21 Aug 1941 SLAKE. His must have been done at the same time. There
are several in the British IGI which could be him, but no way of
idenifying. IGI has one of his daughters shown with mother Elizabeth
Scammon, film 1760930), and Torrey's "New England Marriages...." has a
suggested name, "Scammon" for her but follows it with two question
marks and the surname appears to have been crossed out. (see her notes)
Duane Josephson's "Emigrant Ancestors" states that Torrey said Thomas
and Elizabeth were married in Salisbury. Torrey's manuscript does give
Salisbury as one of his places of residence but I don't think that means
he says they were married there. He gives no definite date of marriage.
One of the sources given by him was "Salisbury Families 190", probably
"Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury, Massachusetts", by David W.
Hoyt, 1897, which says, on page 190, speaking of William Hackett of
Dover, "In 1665 or '6 he bought of Thomas Atkins and wife Elizabeth,
land in Sagadahock [Bath, Me.]" In a note at the bottom of the page it
says "A Mary Haccat was dead in 1716, leaving daus. Mary, Sarah and
Rebeca Haccat, and sisters Rachel Berry of Boston, and others. They
were daus. of Thomas Atkins, of Boston, but formerly inhabitant and
owner of land at Small Point near Sagadahock ....". This is the only
information in the book about Thomas Atkins and it doesn't say he was a
resident of Salisbury. Small Point is about 75 miles up the coast from
Salisbury. The explanation may be in the 1967 NEHGR article which says,
in the information about his first daughter, Mary, on page 242, that
Mary's husband, William Hackett of Dover, Exeter and Kennebec, has often
been mistaken for that of Capt. William Hackett of Salisbury.
Duane Josephson's book also says according to "Emigrant Ancestors,
Miscellaneous" in his CD data base, there was a Thomas Atkins, age 16,
aboard the ship Dorset bound for "ye Bermodos" (Bermuda?) in 1635.
This could possibly be the Thomas Atkins who later showed up in Maine.
Bermuda records could be searched for his marriage. Hotten's "ORIGINAL
LISTS....." shows a Thomas Atkins in the Sept 1635 list of those aboard
the Dorset, bound for Bormodos. (pg 133) It also lists a Thomas Atkins
on page 434 in a list of burials of the Parish of St. Michaels, Barbados,
with date 17 June 1679.
The article in the 1967 NEHGR says "Thomas Atkins, called 'a Kennebec
farmer, lived in that area now known as Phippsburg, Maine. From the
data at hand we assume that Thomas Atkins and his wife Elizabeth (her
parentage is unknown) were married in England somewhere near 1640;
thus he would have been born before 1620. No date of their arrival in
this country has been found but he is first mentioned, 15 May 1654, in a
list of inhabitants along the Kennebec, who were ordered to meet at the
house of Thomas Ashley at Merry Meeting upon the 23rd of the present
month to take the oath of fidelity and for the setting of a government
under the jurisdiction of New Plymouth (Plymouth Colony Records 'Court
Orders', vol 3 pg 58-62). However, there is some slight evidence he may
have been there as early as 1648: a Thomas Ackings is mentioned in the
accounts of Mr. Francis Knight and Mr. John Holland, 1647-8 (Suffolk
Deeds, Liber 3, p. 100). In 1656 he bought a large tract of land of the
Indians, 'the whole neck down to Small Point,' according to Depositions
in York Deed, Book 6, p. 17, 140, 161). These settlers along the
Kennebec, driven out by the Indian massacres, found refuge in the Salem
area, Boston, Weymouth, Braintree and Scituate, where many of their
children married. Thomas Atkins returned and died in Maine before 10
Nov 1686 but there is no evidence as to when his wife died. We find no
birth records for his children, but the first three were probably born in
England. Neither do we know the order in which they were born, but give
them approximately as deduced from the data accumulated.
No probate record has been found, but the following YORK DEED, Bk 8 p.
169, shows the distribution of his lands: Elizabeth Davis of Beverly,
Essex county, widow; Samuel Clark of Marblehead, blacksmith and Anne
his wife; Samuel Gurney of Little Comption [sic] county Bristol,
husbandman and Sarah his wife; George Pike of Mendom, Suffolk county,
husbandman and Hester his wife; James Berry of Boston, labourer and

Referring to the above deed: there are some mis-statements which
should be explained which will help to trace those mentioned. Thomas
Washburn was of Bridgewater, Plymouth County; Bridgewater was never
in Bristol County. Samuel Gurney was of Little Comfort, Plymouth
County, the name by which Abington was first known."

Thomas married Elizabeth 71 about 1641 in Possibly England. Elizabeth was born about 1620 in Possibly England.

Children from this marriage were:

6495. Elizabeth 71 was born about 1620 in Possibly England.

General Notes: !See notes of husband.
Torrey's "New England Marriages...." has a suggested surname,
"Scammon" for Elizabeth but follows it with two question marks and the
film copy of his manuscript looks like the name may have been crossed
out. Sources were Salisbury Families 190; Libby's Dict: 67; and Reg.
65:293.
The first must be "Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury,
Massachusetts", by David W. Hoyt, 1897, which, on page 190, mentions
Thomas Atkins but has nothing about his wife nor anyone named
Scammon.
The second is "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire" by
Sybil Noyes, Charles T. Libby and Walter G. Davis, 1976. It has an
account of Thomas Atkins on page 67 which gives no surname for his
wife. It also has accounts of some of the children of Richard Scammon,
but nothing showing Elizabeth Scammon as wife of Thomas Atkins.
The third source is "New Eng. Hist. and Gen. Reg." Vol. 65, 1911. This is
a note by Charles T. Libby given on page 293 which concerns the
Scammon family. It says the will of Mrs. Elizabeth Saffyn, widow of Mr.
Peter Lidgett of Boston, dated 14 Apr 1682, gives legacies to brothers
John and Richard "Scammond", sister Anne Waldron, cousin Elizabeth
Attkins, daughter of brother John, and others. It says "This Elizabeth
Atkins I surmise may have been the wife of Thomas Atkins at the mouth
of the Kennebec, who left ten daughters ...".
A Scammon account by G. Frank Scammon, (M-fiche 6017346), says she
was daughter of John Scammon, son of Richard, who emigrated from
England to Barbados, then to Boston about 1630 and eventually to Dover,
New Hampshire where he died about 1660. It lists five children for
Richard who it says was born about 1600. They are John, Anne, Richard,
Elizabeth and Humphrey. The only one given a birthdate was Humphrey,
born 1640. It said some historians have felt that Humphrey was son of
John but family tradition maintains that they were brothers. It said
John was probably born in England, lived in Kittery, Maine, and later may
have returned to Barbados, name of wife unknown. It showed Anne
married about 1650, her last child born 1678, Richard's marriage was
given as 1661, Elizabeth's 1650, with only two children, the last born
1651, and Humphrey 1670.
The dates make it questionable that the Elizabeth who married Thomas
Atkins was daughter of this John as one daughter, by her own deposition,
was born 1644 or 1645. The Barclay account in NEHGR vol. 121 says one
was born about 1642 but no real proof of that. Thus, even if Elizabeth
had been only 17 at birth of her first child, she would have been born
probably no later than 1625 (the Barclay account) or 1628 (the Scammon
account) and her father probably born about 1604 or 1607. It is strange
that Mr. Scammon would give it that way since he says John's father,
Richard, was born about 1600 and the marriage dates given for the rest
of his children are later than the birth of the oldest Atkins child.
He didn't list any sources and it may be he used the note by Mr. Libby, or
perhaps Torrey's "New Eng. Marriages ...", as source of the assumption
that John's daughter Elizabeth married Thomas Atkins.
It should be noted that the will of Elizabeth Saffyn didn't give the first
name of Elizabeth's husband nor anything further to identify him and it
is only a guess made by Mr. Libby that the Thomas Atkins of Kennebec
might be husband of this Elizabeth Scammon. Also, that Torrey
questioned the surname and may have crossed it out. Even given the
possibility that Richard Scammon was born much earlier and that his son
John was born early enough to be father of the wife of Thomas Atkins,
the sources cited are not enough evidence of the parentage of the wife of
Thomas Atkins.

Elizabeth married Thomas ATKINS 71 about 1641 in Possibly England. Thomas was born about 1618 in Possibly England and died before 10 Nov 1686 in Sagadahock, Sagadahock, ME.

General Notes: !Initial source: Family group sheet in the FGRA collection of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, submitted by Mrs. Lilly M. Card Clark, 696 No. 4th East, Bountiful, Utah. Her sources: B15A39 p 165
Simmons Gen. by Frank W. Simmons; A5C11 pg 53; A13A85 V. 11 pg 554; A5C10 pg 114, Doane Fam. by A. A. Doane, pg 26-52.
There were some notes at the bottom of the sheet, in the handwriting of Mrs. Dorothy D. Hall, which gives the new number for the first source as 929.273 Si468s, for the second, 929.273 C674cf (no title), the third, "Waldo Anc.", 1902, (929.273 W147L), the fourth, 929.273 D65d. The FGRA sheet shows his birth 1591, Cheshire, Engl. died 21 Feb1686, Plymouth, Plymth, Mssc., son of Mr. Doane. It shows first wife Mrs. Abigail Doane, (2) Ann (3) 1659 Lydia. (see below)
"The Doane Family", by Alfred A. Doane, 1902, states that the inventory of John Doane's estate was certified by his wife Abigail. The actual record doesn't state "wife", only "Abigail Doane". "Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines" and also a Doane family history by Mrs. Emma M. Barrows, says this was his daughter, Abigail, and his wife at the time of his death was Lydia. "The Dawes-Gates" account says that in 1648 his wife's name was Ann, who signed a deed with him. (Eastham Town Records, bk 1.) She must have died before 1 Apr 1659 because a deed of that date was made selling land "with the concent of his wife Mistris Lydia Done". (The source given was "Mayflower Descendant", XIII, 232.) It seems likely the assumption of the identity of the signature to his inventory is the only source of the name of his wife being Abigail. Most recent researchers accept the conclusion that his first wife was Ann and the second Lydia, no certainty as to surnames.
The FGRA sheet has five children, all except one with estimated birth years. Birth of the first child is abt 1624, marriage 11 Sep 1645, the next, has full date of birth 13 Jan 1631, married 1690. This poses a
question about whether there were more children between the two. (See notes for Anne, sister of John, for the suggestion that she could be a daughter of John instead of sister. In his will, only Abigail, John and a granddaugher "Margaret Hixs" are mentioned by name but it directs his son to divide what is left after death of his wife among "all my sons and daughters". Death date given on the FGRA sheet of Mr. and Mrs. Doane shows Anne died 1680, after the date of the will but before his death.)

From "Gates and Allied Families": "John Doane, an Englishman, born about 1590, came to New England in or near 1630 bringing undoubtedly a wife and one daughter, Lydia. They settled at Plymouth, Massachusetts, where they had a second child Abigail, born in January, 1631-2. About fifteen years, well filled with varied public services and privagte enterprises, were spent there. He was one of the few who bore the title of 'Mr." The Pilgrims were very careful to give no titles where they were not due. (A note at the bottom of the page says "About this time [1631] it was customary with the inhabitants here [Salem] and elsewhere to give the title of Mr. and Mrs. to but very few of either sex. The usual appellations of adults were goodman and goodwife before their respective surnames.") He was chosen one of the 'Cowncell' or Assistants to the Governor, on January 1, 1632-3, and became a freeman that year. A law had been passed the year before laying a fine of L20 sterling against anyone who refused to serve as Governor after election to that position, or of L10 in the case of Councillor, although refusal of a second consecutive term in these offices was optional. (Sources given for this paragraph were "Plymouth Colony Records", "Historical Memoirs of New
Plymouth", by F. Baylies & S. G. Drake, 1866, and "The Pilgrim Republic", by J. A. Goodwin, 1888.)
"Before January 2, 1633-4, John had been made a Deacon in the place of Thomas Blossom and, on this date, 'at the request of the church and himselfe was freed from the office of an Assistant in the Comonweale.' This suggests his personal preference for religious rather than civil service and also hints at a belief of incompatibility between the two. However, his activities in both lines continued in marked degree and he retained his position as Deacon in this church until his removel from Plymouth in 1645. As an agent for this body he bought for :120, in 1642,the home and grounds of the Reverend Ralph Smyth whose ministerial services had terminated, and that year, with the approval of the organization, he made over the property to John Reynor, who was succeeding the Reverend Mr. Smyth as pastor. (Sources given for thisparagraph were all the above.)
"John was chosen on January 5, 1635-6, to assist the Governor and Council 'to sett shuch rates on goods to be sould & laboureres for their hire, as should be meete & juste' thus showing an early instance of government control of prices and wages. He was chosen again on March 1, following, to assist the same group 'for the ceasing of men for the publick charge of this prnt [present] yeare' and chosen also, on November 15, 1636, to assist in the first revision of the laws of the Colony, namely the Mayflower Compact. This latter assignment constitutes no small compliment to his wisdom and integrity. He served on juries at least twenty times between March, 1636-7 and Mar. 1652-3, on grand juries in 1640 and 1641 and as Deputy or Representative for Plymouth at least seven times between May, 1639, and March, 1643-4. (Sources given for this paragraph were "The Pilgrim Republic", by J.A. Goodwin; "Plymouth Colony Records"; "Library of Cape Cod Histoy..."; "Colonial Lists" by E.W. Pierce; and "History of Eastham..." by Pratt.)
"The type of punishment in vogue at that time is shown in the case of a servant who 'had runne away & absented himselfe five daies from his masters service, and being lost in the woods, & fowned by an Indian, was forced to returne' and was 'privately whipped before the Gov & Cowncill' of which John was then a member. Another instance is seen in the case of widow Billington to whom had been assigned, in March, 1635-6, the use of certain marsh from which to cut hay for her stock, with the statement that 'what is too much for her is for Mr Done.' Evidently this indeterminate grant caused friction and recrimination on her part for on June 7 following, 'John Done, yeoman, entreth an account of slander, & layeth it in an 100 li [L] against Helen Billington, widow' and the Court upheld his contention as to defamation but not his claim for damage, by sentencing the defendant to pay him L5 and 'to be sett in the stocks & be whipt.' (Source for this paragraph was "Plymouth Colony Records")
"In both 1633 and 1634 John assisted in making out the assessment and tax lists for the Colony and was himself 'rated' at 01:07"00 to be paid in corn at six shillings per bushel. He was one of a committee to collect money for the building of a mill for the town in 1635 and to engage workmen and oversee them in its construction; to divide meadow in 1633, and to lay out lands in 1642. He was one of several leading men whom the Coourt appointed in March, 1636-7, and re-appointed in June following, to advise with the Governor and Assistants regarding the continuance, encouragement and control of the trade in 'beaver, corne & beads' with the Indians. (Sources for this paragraph were "Doane Family " by A.A. Doane; "Library of Cape Cod..."; and "Plymouth Colony Records".)
"As is well known, only dependable men whose integrity was proved were allowed to sell liquor in the early days so it is a recommendation rather than a disparagement that on June 4, 1639, 'Mr. John Done is allowed to draw wine untill the next Court, that further order may be taken therein.' Through some misunderstanding, when his year's license was about to expire, on June 2, 1640, the jury voted that 'we psent Mr. Done for selling wine contrary to ordeer made by the Court,' but immediately his exoneration was recorded as follows: "It was mistaken by the grand inquest [jury] and so he was discharged by the Court the 3d of September, 1640, and appoynted by the Court to be thus rased [erased] out.' That he held this same privilege at a later date is evident from the statement of January 7, 1644-5, that 'Whereas Mr. John Done is lycensed to draw wyne in Plymouth, and that James Cole is likewise lycensed to keepe the ordinary there, wch is very inconvenyent to many passengers, the Court hath therefore, lycenced the said James Cole from this day forward to draw wyne, if he shall agree wth Mr. Done to take off those wynes hee now hath in his hands. Agreement was after made betwixt them.' (Source for this paragraph was "Plymouth Colony Records".)
"In 1641 John was one of a committee appointed to audit the accounts of James Luxford and, again in 1644-5, was one of another committee to audit the books of the Treasurer of the Colony, Thomas Prence, reporting to the Court in each case. He was chosen as an assistant to the Governor in 1642. (Sources: "Plymouth Colony Records" and "History of Eastham..." by Pratt.)
"He had many grants of land and made various purchases of such beside. One grant in 1636-7 was of 'hey ground at the Heigh Pines' and one purchase in 1633-4 from John Coomb was of 'a dwelling house & misted [mearstead] with the inclosure & out howsing thereunto belonging. . . ' The home 'neere unto Plaine Dealing' which he occupied in and before 1636 he bought for L60 the share formerly owned by John. In 1642 the latter 'in consideracon of four goats payd him by Mr. Willm Bradford sold a garden place adjoining his home.' Being called 'John Done, of Plymouth, gent.' he signed a bond in 1637 in the amount of L11 for Thomas Butler of Duxbury and, on February 19, 1645, he sold his residence to William Hanbury doubtless because of the removal of himself and family from Plymouth. The transfer of this property included a reservation that 'The corne now groweing in the garden is excepted with some half a dossen of smale fruite trees wch the said Willm Hanbury shall give the said John Done at fall or spring.' These were, undoubtedly, intended for transplanting to the new home in Eastham. (Source: Plymouth Colony Records".)
"It is evident that John had acquintance and business relations with John Atwood while the latter was resident in London in 1633, as well as after he removed to Plymouth in or before 1636 for, in the former year, John had 'command of' Walter Harris, Atwood's servant; in 1636 he and Atwood were joint owners of real estate and on June 3, 1639, John acknowledged agreed to pay on June 1, following, a debt of L3-17s. to Atwood who 'pmised to forbeare yt untill.' (Source: "Plymouth Colony Records".)
"John reared at least two children beside his own for, in 1633, he became guardian of and took into his home Mary Browne, whose father, Peter, had just died, and he received from the widow Browne, at the direction of the Court, L15 which he might use but must repay to Mary when she reached the age of seventeen. This payment was made in 1644, with the consent of his ward and the approval of the Court, in the form of two cows valued at L13 and of 'swyne and wheate' to the value of 40 shillings. The other child to receive shelter in his home in 1633 was probably his own nephew. That year John was made the administrator for and presented an inventory of the estate left by the widow Martha Harding, who is believed to have been his sister, and left to his care, her son Joseph even though she had adult Harding relatives living in the community. This fact, with the added ones that John had advanced over :9 to her before her death and that this Joseph Harding was complaied of in 1652 for 'carrying an Indians gun unto the smith to bee mended in his unkels name', justifies a belief in their relationship. (A note says "An Anna Doane who is said to bave married William Twining in 1652 was perhaps also his sister." "Twining Family" by T. W. Twining. Source for the paragraph is "Plymouth Colony Records".)
The custom of having bound servants frequently obtained in those days and John, as agent for John Atwood, then of London, had control of the services of Walter Harris for five years and, in 1633, sold this claim, with the sonsent of the latter, to Henry Howland for L14. In his own behalf, about 1637, he bought for L8 the remainder of a six-year term of service due from Matthew Osborn to John Reed. ("Plymouth Colony Records")
"On May 10, 1644, John, with Myles Standish, took an invertor of the personal property left by Elder William Brewster. In 1643 or 1644, the church at Plymouth appointed a committee, which included John, to explore, survey and purchase of the Indians, Nauset which, in 1651, became Eastham. They did this, reserving for the Natives the right to gather shell fish in the cove and to have a part of the blubber of all the whales which were driven on the shore. The church, in turn, transferred this purchase at its cost price to seven families of Plymouth, including those of Thomas Prence, John Doane and Edward Bangs, who wished to settle there. The removal of these families occurred in 1644-5, that of the Doanes evidently being in the latter year since John did not dispose of his wine stock in Plymouth until after January 7, or of his house there until February 19, 1645. It is said that the mother church regretted the departure of these families for they 'wre among the most respectable inhabitants of Plymouth.' (Sources for this paragraph: "Mayflower Descendant" III: 18; "Historical Memoir of New Plymouth Colony" by Balies; "History of Cape Cod..." by Freeman; "History of Eastham" by Pratt; and "Plymouth Colony Records".)
"The religios and civic activities of John were carried on in his new home for he soon became, and continued until his death, a Deacon of the Churccch which was soon formed and served as a Representative of this town of Eastham probably from its organization in 1646, and certainly in 1647, 1649, to 1654 and 1659. The early records are far from complete but the service of John as Deputy continued 'until the infirmities of age forced him to ask the town to be relieved of that duty, but so confiding was the town in his ability, wisdom and integrity that they unanimously voted him additional compensation to induce him to continue to serve in that capacity. Much other service as selectman and otherwise may also have been performed by him but since his son John was old enough by this time to have qualified and no positive discrimination is possible between these two men of the same name, it is assumed that these positions may have been held by the younger man. (Sources: "History of Eastham"; "Plymouth Colony Records"; "Library of Cape Cod History..."; and "History of Barnstable County.." by Deyo.)
"In April, 1653, the Plymouth Court enacted that 'Whereas wee have intelligence out of our native countrey [England] of danger that may bee towards us in regard of the great varience betwist the two nations of Holland and England, the Court have ordered, that warrants bee directed to every towne . . . to require them to make choice of two deputies for eich towne, to meet with the majestrates att Plymouth on Wensday, the sixt of Aprill next, and with them to treat and conclude on such milletery affaires as through Gods blessing may probably tend to oour psent and future safety' and the 'Names of those that mett at Plymouth as Deputies for the several Townes for the Ends above mencioned' included 'Mr John Doane' and Richard Sparrow for Eastham. ("History of Cape Cod..."by Freeman and "History of Eastham..." by Pratt.)
The menace herein, to the colonists, lay in the direction of their Dutch neighbors in the new world in case the two mother countries became involved in war. As a result of this conference the Court ordered that money should be raised; a force of sixty soldiers enlisted, including a quota of three from Eastham; 'arms, powder and balls' procured and that a military watch be kept in each town as well as armed protection by a certain part of the military force at all public worship. ("History of Cape Cod ..." by Freeman)
"John was appointed by the court, in 1663, to 'adminester marriage' and to swear witnesses in Eastham. He had numerous grants of land in this vicinity and, in October, 1657, with Richard Sparrow, was among several who asked for 'som proportions of land att a place about thirteen English miles from Rehoboth and, with them, in June, 1658, received land 'lying betwixt Bridgewater and Waymouth,'though no removal on his part is apparent. In October, 1662, either he or his son John received a grant 'on the northerly bounds of Taunton' [see map on p. 243]. This gives an idea of how scattered the holdings of the early proprietors were. ("Plymouth Colony Records")
Certain laws and penalties of that day are of interest by comparison with our own freedom from restraint. In 1651 it was ordered that if any 'lazy, slothful or profane persons' in any town should neglect to frequent public worship they should forfeit ten shillings for every such failure or be publicly whipped. In 1655, a fine of similar amount was levied against one who lied, in 1660 a fine of L1 was assessed for slander, while humor is stirred by evidence of a like penalty, in 1661, 'for lying about a whale.' A law was passed in 1665 justifying the infliction of corporal punishment on all persons who denied the scriptures; providing that all persons who should stand outside of the meeting house during the time of divine service should be set in the stocks and requiring that local officials should complain to the authorities of all who should absent themselves from public worship. ("History of Cape Cod..." by Freeman and "History of Eastham..." by Pratt.) .......
"Stone monuments bearing the initials of John, presumably erected and perhaps even chiseled by his own hands, are still to be seen here they were planted as boundary stones of his large farm north of the 'Town Cove' in the present town of Eastham. (written in 1931) ( Sources: "Library of Cape Cod History...." and "History of Eastham") ........
"On May 18, 1678, John signed his will, calling himself 'eighty and eight years or there about,' directing that his wife [unnamed] should have the home, certain other described property and all the personal estate during her life and providing that at her death the home and land should go to his daughter Abigail who was still unmarried. John did not die until February 21, 1685, and the accuracy of the inventory of his estate was sworn to on May 29, 1686, by an Abigail Doane who was undoubtedly his daughter. On December 2, 1681, in a deed which called him 'Gent., Tayler,' he conveyed to this daughter, unconditionally, the identical property bequeathed, by the will of 1678, to his wife and following her, to the daughter, thus suggesting the demise of the wife, Lydia, between the date of the will and that of the deed mentioned, and suggesting that he was merely carrying out this intent of the former document in advance of his death. ("Mayflower Descendant", III, 177-8)
"His will gave to his son Daniel 'all that Land which he now liveth upon and twenty acres of land nere a place called the dry swamp; and . . . four acres and a half of meadow' with a share of the personal property. According to his own statement of his age he must have been born about 1590 and, therefore, have been about ninety-five years old at his death, though the inventory of his estate calls him one hundred and ten at death and tradition adds, probably erroneously, 'that he was rocked in a cradle several of his last years." John married Ann 71 about 1623 in England. Ann was born about 1596 in England.

The child from this marriage was:

3250       i.  Daniel DOANE 71,234 (born about 1637 in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA - died on 20 Dec 1712)

John next married Lydia DOANE (Mrs.) 71 in 1659 in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA. Lydia was born about 1595 in Plymouth, Plymouth, MA.

General Notes: See notes for her husband. "Dawes-Gates...", "on April 1 of that year (1659) he, 'with concent of his wife Mistris Lydia Done' deeded to widow Alice Bradford a tract of one hundred acres in Plymouth which had been paid for by, but not conveyed to, her husband, William Bradford, during his life." Her husband's will gave her certain property which after her death was to go to his daughter Abigail. The will was dated 18 May 1678.

6501. Ann 71 was born about 1596 in England.

General Notes: !See notes for her husband. "The Doane Family", by Alfred A. Doane, 1902, states that John Doane's inventory was certified by his wife Abigail. The record doesn't state "wife", only Abigail Doane. "Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines" and also a Doane family history by Mrs. Emma M. Barrows, says this was his daughter Abigail and his wife in 1648 was Ann, who signed a deed with him covering an exchange of land with Daniel Cole. (Eastham Town Records, Bk 1.) She must have died before 1659 because a deed of that year stated that his wife was Lydia. (Mayflower Desc." XIII, 232.)

Stackpole, a noted genealogist. He checked the original records of the Fishmonger's Company, London, and found Gov. Thomas Robert's father to be John Roberts ... Not Thomas Roberts as listed by many sources. This sheet gives his christening, marriage and parents. "Ye Atte Wode
Annals" calls him "Johanem" and names him with Derick, christened at
the same date, probably twins.
There is a note at the bottom of the FGRA sheet which says "Since no
probate record or similar type record has been found for John, the father
above, it has been difficult to establish this family. Several of the
children are only presumed to belong to this group. There is little if any
doubt concerning the parentage of Harman, John and Agnes, children no.
2, 3, and 5. Abigail Atwood Shurtleff, great gd dau. of John, child no. 3,
... (see below) John, Stephen and Henry were closely associated in the
Plymouth Colony, having land adjoining each other, and by their actions
indicating a close relationship. Johanna, child no. 1, is known to be a
child of a John Atwood, and since the above father is the only John
Atwood known to have been in this parish at that time, it is assumed she
was his first child. It could have been by a former marriage, but there is
no additional evidence. The claim that a Mary and a Philip Atwood also
belong to this family can not be supported by any evidence."
In "Ye Atte Woode Annals" it says "Abigail Atwood Shurtleff 1755-1826,
left a record that her great grandfather, John Atwood, had two brothers,
Stephen and William. I do not know where she got her information ... .
She was right about Stephen. There was a William at Charlestown, called
as a Juror about 1653, with family unknown. Here Elizabeth Atwood was
admitted to church 1633, and we do not know her. There were stray
Atwoods who perhaps belonged to William; as, Francis had a daughter
Hannah baptized at Haverhill 1691; a widow Mehitable Atwood at
Braintree who could not quite be his; Ebenezer at Bradford, married
around this time, etc. But also Thomas, son of Thomas of Ipswich
evidently had children, as Edward of Middleboro. The two named William
Wood at Yarmouth absolutely were not Atwood. The close association of
John, Stephen and Henry tends to prove Henry a brother also. Stephen and
Henry first appear at Plymouth 1641. John already had some land. Twice
this year the three got land adjoining. Each was Wood, alias Atwood.
They were propounded freemen together and admitted together in 1647.
In 1648 they received a joint grant of land. Each, in turn, was in charge
of the herring weir. When Stephen decided to settle in Eastham, Henry
went along, but returned to settle in Middleboro, while John settled in
Plympton, the part now Carver. On the whole I am satisfied that Harman,
John, Stephen and Henry were brothers and perhaps also William of
Charlestown, and probably one or more unidentified wives of others were
their sisters."
The FGRA sheet lists seven children, Johanna, Harman, John, Stephen,
Agnes, Henry and William.

Further in "Ye Atte Wode Annals" it says "Johannes was our leather
seller John for in 1631 he sued his brother Harman for lands their father
Nicholas had settled on his youngest son, Richard. The latter had died, so
John, now being youngest son, saw a chance for himself. Whence
evidently comes the various Atwood tratitions of the American ancestor
being disinherited, or having best right to estate in England but never
claiming it.
John Wood married Joan Coleson ... and two children were baptized at St.
Martin's (Harman and John) ... I think they then moved to Chancery Lane,
London. There is absolutely no doubt that Stephen was brother of these,
and but little doubt of Henry."
